Women in development : 18 tips for career success

The following is a collection of expert advice from our panel on the challenges and opportunities for women in development
http://www.westhillconsulting-career.com/blog/2013/08/29/women-development-18-tips-career-success/

Ayse Cihan Sultanoglu, UN assistant secretary-general, New York, US. @csultanoglu

To get to the top, don't be afraid of starting at the bottom: In building a career in development it is important that you experience living and working in developing countries. This could mean that you must be willing to do something that you had never really considered or something that is out of your comfort zone. Young women shouldn't be afraid of starting at the bottom.

The problem is not at the top, but at middle management level: Not having women in top positions isn’t the challenge or attracting women at entry levels also does not seem to be too difficult either but the lagging numbers of women in middle-management positions is the problem.

Make sure you are adaptable: In any field, you need to renew yourself constantly, maybe more so in development. It is diverse, dynamic and constantly evolving because of its very nature so there is always room for innovation, learning and sharing.

Jackie Asiimwe, country manager, Wellspring Advisers, Uganda. @asiimwe4justice

Emotions make a leader authentic: Women are being branded as too emotional making it seem that emotions are a bad thing. In my own leadership journey, I have decided I will embrace my emotions because they are part of what makes me human and woman. Emotions are part of being an authentic leader. We cannot be clinical about leadership, Jackie Asiimwe said.

Rushanara Ali, shadow minister for international development, London, UK. @rushanaraali

We need anti-discrimination laws that are properly enforced: nowadays, anti-discrimination laws to protect women in the labor market and public institutions are very crucial in any society. If those laws are not properly enforced then too often women have to rely on the goodwill, patronage and whims of men to have fair chance to make a contribution to the economy and the society they live in.

Programmes to develop leadership skills are key: here is what we should do, we must invest in leadership development, building strong networks and providing mentoring opportunities and resources to help women get plugged into the power structures if we want to see more women in parliaments around the world.

Liz Bowen, HR manager (field staffing), Médecins Sans Frontières, London, UK

Women working in the field face a separate challenge: They say that in countries where women have a more subservient role they are actually viewed as a kind of 'separate' gender. An instance is they won't be treated like the male expats they are working with or like the local females.

Success is not just about getting to the 'top': I chose not to climb the executive ladder and instead work in a role which allows me to make a significant contribution to the humanitarian sector while still being able to spend time with my young daughter. For me this is a significant achievement, says Liz Bowen.

Organizational cultures need to be challenged from within: she said, we must work on shifting the accepted norms and push our organizations to open their minds about creative working patterns for women in leadership roles.

Adele Nandan, director of international education, Opportunity International, Chicago, US. @OpportunityIntl

Mentoring: Mentorship is serious but there needs to be a greater stress placed on mentoring not only western women in the global development field but women from the countries in which we're working too.

Mary Woodgate, senior manager of global programmes,Accenture Development Partnerships, London, UK. @MaryWoodgate

What does leaning in look like in development?: All with passion and personal investment for your and your organisation's development goals you must do the following: speaking up, asking questions, innovating, networking, accepting responsibility and accountability.

It is important to communicate vision in a human way: I think there's a real role for female creative thinkers who can tell a compelling narrative, or describe a future vision in order to get people mobilised around an idea and able to leave some of their institutional 'baggage' behind and cut through the potential barriers — especially in impactful partnerships, says Mary Woodgate.

Resource: Women in development must read from the article 'Women need to realise work isn't school'. They will learn some tips.

Laure Blanchard-Brunac, principal banker, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, London, UK

Find your voice while you are young: it is always better to start early, according to Laure Blanchard-Brunac, the younger you are when starting to speak up, attend board meetings, senior official gatherings where women are under-represented, the better it is: with time you get used to it and the men get used to it too, most of them will remain focus on your added value and will see you, if not as an equal, at least as a trusted partner.

Women need stronger support networks: males are still more dominant in some developing community. Power networks are still male networks in the development community. Getting support from mentors, people more senior than you in the organization you work in — male or female — is tremendously important. As a woman, when climbing the ladder you will be more isolated than your male counterparts so you need stronger support.

Marinke van Riet, international director, Publish What You Pay, London, UK. @Marinkekarianne

Whether to 'lean in' or 'lean back' depends on context: there are times that you have to lean in and take an unpopular decision. But on the other hand, other times simply your silent presence can be enough for people to reach consensus. Even the term leadership can be interpreted differently depending on the process of decision making: for instance very different styles are needed in implementing organizations rather than in coalitions.

Being spontaneous and intuitive can lead to success: I didn't plan my career very carefully. All I know is that I have been ambitious right from the start, never said no to things I was secretly scared to do, and have not been afraid to make mistakes or ask 'stupid' questions, says Marinke van Riet.

Jeni Klugman, director of gender and development, World Bank, Washington, DC, US

Without a supportive partner, success is almost impossible: The key is having because supportive partner without that a successful career in development is pretty much impossible. You need the flexibility to travel, to live abroad for extended periods of time, and a family that is happy to join in on the journey.

Tips for Embracing Thorns on Your Journey to Success

• Different is GOOD. Never retreat from new and different experiences, opportunities, and challenges.  It is not bad if you can learn something from it.  Adding the unique value preposition, yes it is you; it is definitely not a mistake.  Being different is a plus in most every instance - this is what true diversity is all about.

• Difficulty yields GROWTH.  There will be no growth if you won’t stretch yourself, physically, emotionally and mentally.  Your nearest potential will not be realized  unless you try.  But remember that this doesn’t mean that we must be stressed all the time because it is not healthy.  We all need downtime to recover and rejuvenate.  Never retreat and avoid something just because it is hard.  Just go with it, step forward and eventually you'll figure out a way through it.

• Failing is LEARNING.  Don’t take failing all negatively, remember that some of  your best experiences and development will come from.  You will learn a lot from failing, most of the learning in life is learned from it.  And keep in mind that you are not a failure just because you failed.  It will allow you to figure out the difference between being the best and being your best.

• LEAN ON others.  Learn to have a good relationship with other people, life is about the relationships you create, develop, and grow.  Remember the saying no man is an island; it is because your journey is not one that you must go alone.  You will grow much from the support of others and will have opportunities to support others yourself.  Many of life's greatest joys come from this.  People who make you better and don't tear you down are people you need in you life.

• IT IS all about YOU (not them). There will always be people who will put you down and you will run to them almost often.  They will call you out in a negative light and these may come for whatever reason, and sometimes that reason won't be evident. They will work to derail you.  Don't worry about them and their success, focus on yours. It is you that is important and not them.  This is the proverbial: "Life is 10 percent what happens to you and 90 percent how you react to it."  You have no hold on how those around you behave, but you absolutely have ownership of every choice you make.

Types of Personal Assistant Scams

A usual personal assistant scams offer various payment for helping them transfer money to businessmen at other companies. What they do is they will send you a check or money order. They are asking you to forward part of the money while you keep a percentage of it. And of course it will turn out that the check is fraudulent and you will be mandated to pay back your bank.

What other scams do is they will ask for a personal assistant who then will receive and ship different packages. These are in fact illegal good but the scammer will claim these packages are related to his company. They will also send you or they might send you a fraudulent check for shipping cost. With addition to your dilemma not only you will be forced to pay back for the fraudulent check, you could also be charged with mailing illegal goods.

How to Avoid Personal Assistant Scams In general, you should always research on an employer first before committing; this also applies with these kinds of scams. Make sure you research an employer before applying for a job. Some listings for personal assistants are tremendously unclear, only citing that the employer works from home. Do not hesitate to ask because you have the every right to ask for any information concerning the company with which your potential employer is associated. An example is if the employer says he is a lawyer working from home, make sure he has actually worked on cases or belonged to a real firm. It is a simple logic.

How to Tell Legitimate Work at Home Jobs From Scams

Avoid scams by following these tips.

Use common sense. Assess! Consider the logic of an opportunity from the other side. Think about this, if they are paying you so much for so little work, how would the promoters of the opportunity make money? Moreover if a company’s marketing tactic is mainly based on coming out legitimate, that is probably because it is tendering a work at home scam…or at the very least a poor money-making opportunity. So remember this, any job that promotes itself in search engine ads as a “legitimate work at home job” almost certainly not legit.

Do your homework. Sending money to any organization without thoroughly checking it out is most certainly wrong! Always remember that legitimate companies do not charge job applicants and that business opportunities are never risk-free

Know how to spot the work at home scam. One very complicated trick is a scam technique that sets up a whole website dedicated to revealing work at home scams and then funnel people to the few “legitimate” work at home jobs which those are not legitimate of course.

Know the typical work at home scams. Scammers are always developing new schemes, and work-at-home scammers are no different. Below are some that you must avoid. Direct Sales or multilevel marketing (MLM) Pyramid Schemes - Always avoid! Business start-up kits Anything involving cashing checks/wiring money – Always avoid! Home assembly/envelope stuffing – Always avoid! Becoming a product re-seller or wholesaler Stock trading systems – Always avoid! Directories of telecommuting jobs or businesses Taking online surveys Mystery shopping Data entry/call centers (Some are legit but, the lure of these jobs is used to sell bogus start-up kits and other scams.)

Avoid job opportunities found on advertising on search engines and many websites. Remember that legit companies are looking for legit work home jobs and just like any other employer, are looking for qualified, reliable people to do the work. Screening applicants is a time-consuming procedure so therefore those casting a wide net by using Google or search engine ads may not be legitimate.

Don’t pay for opportunities. Employers don’t charge employees to work for them, you have got to remember that! And those scams posing as “legitimate business opportunities” will ask for money. Businesses are expected to have start-up costs nonetheless true businesses are normally not simple exchanges of unskilled labor for payment, as in home assembly and envelope-stuffing schemes.

Report scams. Report immediately if you suspect that you have been scammed. If you’ve given out financial information contact your bank at once. And report it to your state’s attorney general or any number of other authorities.

The most obvious hurdles that you need to face during your job search are: maybe you have the record of a job hopper, or maybe you have always wanted to be in a career that does not fit your current skills.
